Professional development is important in any career. As educators, I think it is important to stay up to date with all of the current trends, theories and legal decisions. It is also important to learn and understand the history of our educational system. If we understand the laws and court decisions that have influenced and shaped today's educational system, we will be better prepared to combat any educational hurtles that come our way!

The following presentation will chronologically outline some of the most important legal decisions in regards to ESL education at the national level, as well as at the local level. Some of the important laws that will be discussed are : The Civil Rights ACt, The Bilingual Education Act, Federal Court Cases : Castandeda v. Pickard and Plyer v.
